QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:
Description: An employee in this class performs skilled locksmith work in the repair, alteration, installation, and keying of locks on buildings, equipment, lockers, and vehicles; resolving immediate operational and/or safety concerns; maintaining District keying systems, and proximity access systems; maintaining a preventive maintenance program; and assisting other skilled trades.
Duties and Responsibilities: - Installs locking system (e.g. doors, door hardware, closures, panic hardware, changes lock combinations, security bolts, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining facilities in safe, comfortable, and operating conditions.
- Cuts new or duplicate keys for the purpose of providing the schools with a master key system and ensuring the security of its facilities.
- Repairs various items, systems, and/or components to ensure they are available and in safe working conditions.
- Inspects facilities, systems, and their components to ensure safety, identify necessary repairs, and provide an ongoing program of preventive maintenance.
- Fabricates unique locks and locking devices for the purpose of meeting the specialized security problems within the district.
- Diagnoses malfunctions of security systems to identify repair/replacement needs necessary to maintain systems.
- Performs minor repairs or modifications to door and/or frame for the purpose of ensuring proper closing and security.
- Re-keys locks and changes combinations to ensure the security of facilities.
- Coordinates with administration and other trades to complete projects/work orders efficiently.
- Maintains tools and/or equipment to ensure the availability of equipment in safe operating condition.
- Requests for equipment and supplies to maintain inventory and ensure the availability of required items.
- Assists other trades personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.

Essential Job Functions - Must be physically able to operate a variety of equipment and machinery including hammer drills, saws, and various etc. Must be physically able to operate a motor vehicle. Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 75 pounds of force frequently. Requires the ability to climb and maneuver on ladders, scaffolding, and/or in tight spaces.
- Requires the ability to read work orders, logs, diagrams, blueprints, schematics, etc. Requires the ability to prepare activity logs and reports according to prescribed formats.
- Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists, to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form.
- Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width, and shape.
- Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately using hand tools.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities - General knowledge of locks and security systems, equipment, and fixtures.
- Working knowledge of the tools and equipment used in the installation and repair of locking systems and equipment.
- Some knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of locksmith work and other trades required of the position.
- Some knowledge of the maintenance requirements of locksmiths and related equipment.
- Ability to use and care for hand and power tools and equipment necessary to perform plumbing installation and repair tasks.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods as required by work assignments.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
- Ability to maintain key control for all LPS buildings.
- Keep an accurate key box record of original keys for buildings, vehicles, and equipment.
Special Requirements - Possession of a valid driver's license. Must maintain a safe driving record. Employees assigned to this position must follow specific drug testing requirements, procedures, and consequences of positive alcohol or drug tests.
Minimum Training and Experience - Graduation from high school, preferably supplemented by vocational training, or any equivalent training and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities.
