JOB SUMMARY:

All required documents and testing must be completed by January 19, 2025, at 5:00 pm. The 14-week Advanced Peace Officer School starts on June 2, 2025. (CST)

Starting pay: $5,872.97 monthly or $70,475.63 yearly, based upon the combined calculation of a current 10-hour day, 50-hour work week.

Peace Officers accepted into the Advanced Peace Officer school will receive a combined Trooper-Trainee salary of $70,475.63 ($5,872.97 monthly) for the duration of the 14-week school and, upon graduation, will earn a combined Probationary Trooper annual salary of $76,231.38 ($6,352.61 monthly) during the 6-month Field Training Officer (FTO) Program.

Peace Officers selected to attend the B-2025 Advance Peace Officer School will be guaranteed assignment to a specific Highway Patrol duty station during the Conditional Job Offer of the application process.

Once the FTO Program is complete, Troopers having 4 years of full-time verified prior law enforcement service will advance to the combined Trooper II salary of $110,376.75 ($9,198.06 monthly).

Troopers with less than 4 years of verified full-time prior law enforcement service will advance to the combined Trooper I salary of $90,544.78 ($7,545.40 monthly) until they reach 4 years of combined law enforcement experience. At this time, they will advance to the Trooper II salary as listed above.

Prior law enforcement service is not applicable to promotions, transfers, determining seniority, or other matters in which years of service within DPS are relevant.

ALL New Troopers hired under this provision are subject to a one-year probationary period from the Trooper Trainee Academy graduation date.

Qualifications:

GENERAL DUTIES:

The duties of this position require the candidate to live on campus during the 14-week duration of the school. Therefore, the training may include some weekends. The training is mentally and physically challenging, including a strenuous physical fitness program.

Candidates selected to attend the school must pass the Department's Candidate Physical Fitness Standards on the first day. Upon completing the school and before graduation, candidates in the school must pass the Department's Physical Fitness Standards set for commission officers.

The Department has established a career progression for this position which will enable the employee, after successfully completing the Advanced Peace Officer School, Field Training Officer Program, and Probationary period, to advance as required by Schedule C of the State Salary Scale. Shift and hours will vary (day/evening/night) and will exceed 40 hours or more per week.

All candidates advancing to the position of Probationary Trooper will be assigned to Texas Highway Patrol. As a condition of your employment with the Texas Department of Public Safety, you are agreeing to the possibility of being assigned to any duty station in the State of Texas to meet the needs of the Department.Candidates must be willing to accept assignments within the Highway Patrol duty station assignment they receive during the Conditional Job Offer process of the trooper trainee application.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Candidate must have honorably served (full-time employed, benefits-eligible) as a sworn full-time paid peace officer or Federal Law Enforcement Officer as designated by the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure Article 2.122, within two continuous years as of April 2, 2025.

The Department will not waive the two years of experience performing full-time paid law enforcement duties within two continuous years as of April 2, 2025. Additionally, the Department will not accept service time as a reserve officer, corrections/jailer, and communications operator.

OUT OF STATE, FEDERAL AGENTS/OFFICERS & MILITARY POLICE

Important: Out-of-state peace officers, federal agents/officers, and military police are responsible for submitting their application to the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE), completing the Texas Supplemental Peace Officer online (1018) course, other required courses as determined by TCOLE and pass the TCOLE state licensing examination by April 2, 2025.

Out-of-state, federal agents/officers and military police are responsible for submitting the Out of State/Federal Officers Eligibility Form to the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) and providing required documents to determine eligibility along with all other requirements. Additionally, the candidate is responsible for all fees they may incur to complete the eligibility process. Click on the URL for additional information and forms.

Please expect a delay of two to four weeks from the date the Commission receives the TCOLE Eligibility form for approval/ denial of eligibility.

Out of State, federal agents/officers and military police may proceed through all phases of the application process but cannot complete the Department's hiring process until they have successfully passed the TCOLE Texas Peace Officer licensing examination.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:

Candidates must be at least twenty (20) years of age to apply and must be 21 years of age at the time they graduate from the academy class and are promoted to the position of Probationary Trooper. There is no maximum age limit.

Candidates will be required to receive a passing score on the written exams and pass the Department's physical fitness test. Additionally, candidates will be required to successfully complete a polygraph examination, background investigation, psychological examination, physical/vision examination, and a drug screen.

Candidate must have a valid Driver's License upon appointment as a Trooper Trainee and must obtain a Texas Driver's License prior to graduating from Trooper Trainee Academy.

Candidate must provide performance evaluation for the past two years from your current/previous employer, if applicable.

Candidate must provide an official court disposition on all criminal charges unless the candidate was a minor when the charge occurred.
