DPS Officers perform a variety of law enforcement and public safety functions within the Department of Public Safety (DPS). Assignments vary widely and incumbents are assigned to various divisions within the department including the Nevada State Police, State Fire Marshal's Office, Investigations, Parole & Probation, and Capitol Police. All positions in this series are trained peace officers in accordance with requirements established by the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.). Allocation of positions to various levels within the series is based on the nature and complexity of the assignment; the depth of knowledge in specialized areas of law enforcement and public safety; supervisory responsibility; and level of independence. DPS employees receive an excellent benefits package that includes health, dental and vision insurance, Public Employees Retirement Plan (PERS), three (3) weeks paid vacation, three (3) weeks sick leave, eleven (11) paid holidays, and are not subject to state, county, city or social security taxes.
