POSITION PURPOSE Under general supervision, performs skilled level installation, repair and maintenance of locks, door closures, panic hardware systems and electronic locking systems; recombinate and adjust locks, including coding, key cutting and duplication, repair existing and install new door systems. Performs all levels of carpentry and locksmithing with emphasis on finish work where appearance is as important as the integrity of structure and function. Much of the work is performed with oral or roughly sketched, general directions, requiring the application of standard practices. Unusual assignments are accompanied by detailed directions. The Carpenter is expected to resolve most problems that may arise. Difficult problems are cleared through discussion with the supervisor.
Assignments are received in the form of work orders. The employee is expected to develop and initiate work methods. Employee must exercise independent judgment and initiative in performing assigned duties. Employee must also exercise tact and courtesy in contacts with supervisory and various school officials. Reports to the Carpentry Foreman.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES - Thorough knowledge of the standard methods, materials and equipment employed in carpentry.
- General knowledge of the standard methods, materials, and equipment employed in carpentry work.
- Some knowledge of the occupational hazards of building trades work and the associated safety precautions.
- General knowledge of locks and security systems, equipment, and fixtures.
- Working knowledge of the tools and equipment used in the installation and repair of locking systems and equipment.
- Some knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of locksmith work and other trades required of the position.
- Some knowledge of the maintenance requirements of locksmith and related equipment.
- Ability to use and care for hand and power tools and equipment necessary to perform plumbing installation and repair tasks.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time as required by work assignments.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE - Graduation from high school.
- Considerable and progressively advanced experience in locksmith or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
CERTIFICATION AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS - Must possess a Locksmith License issued by NC Locksmith Licensing Board
- Must possess a valid driver's license issued by the NC Department of Motor Vehicles
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES - Determines type of materials needed.
- Gauges quantities of materials needed.
- Requests materials projected to be needed. Marks cutting and assembly points on materials.
- Erects, moves, and works from scaffolding and ladders; attends to the need for safety precautions.
- Performs semi-skilled roof, ceiling, and door and door hardware repair functions.
- Assists in the repair of drywall and moving or altering of not-load bearing walls.
- Assists in making and repairing cabinets.
- Cuts and shapes material to prescribed directions. Assembles prepared materials.
- Verifies accuracy of product by measuring alignment and fit.
- Installs and repairs glass, as needed.
- Installs locking system (e.g. doors, door hardware, closures, panic hardware, changes lock combinations, security bolts, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining facilities in a safe, comfortable and operating condition.
- Cuts new or duplicate keys for the purpose of providing the county with a master key system and ensuring security of its facilities.
- Repairs various items, systems and/or components for the purpose of ensuring the items are available and in safe working condition.
- Inspects facilities, systems and their components for the purpose of ensuring safety and identifying necessary repairs and providing an ongoing program of preventive maintenance.
- Fabricates unique locks and locking devices for the purpose of meeting the specialized security problems within the district.
- Diagnoses malfunctions of security systems for the purpose of identifying repair/replacement needs necessary to maintain systems.
- Performs minor repair or modifications to door and/or frame for the purpose of ensuring proper closing and security.
- Re-keys locks and changes combinations for the purpose of ensuring security of facilities.
- Coordinates with administration and other trades for the purpose of completing projects/work orders efficiently.
- Maintains tools and/or equipment for the purpose of ensuring the availability of equipment in safe operating condition.
- Requests equipment and supplies for the purpose of maintaining inventory and ensuring availability of required items.
- Assists other trades personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.
- Performs other related work as required.
WORKING CONDITIONS PHYSICAL DEMANDS Work is considered heavy physical work requiring the exertion of up to 100 pounds of force. Must be physically able to operate a variety of equipment, tools, and machinery. Must be physically able to operate motor vehicles, including light pickup. Must be able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 75 pounds of force frequently, and/or 25 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Requires the ability to climb and maneuver on ladders, scaffolding, and/or in tight spaces.
WORK ENVIRONMENT Employees in this position are required to work in indoor and outdoor environments, and come into direct contact with ABSS staff, students and the public.
