Position Available: This position is available as soon as possible and may be eligible for a hybrid work schedule. For more information, consult the Library's Guidelines and Workflows . This is a 100%-time, permanent, twelve-month appointment Academic Professional position in the University Library.

The position provides a high level of research and instructional services for the University Archives and its various program areas through the application of a mixture of strategies and services. The position reports to the University Archivist.

Duties and Responsibilities: This position assumes a lead role in providing research and instructional services to a broad range of faculty, students, and the general public including doing so through overseeing the accessioning and processing of archival materials in all formats. The successful candidate will be comfortable working in a team environment as well as working independently. Specific responsibilities include:

Research and Instructional Services:

  • Oversee all aspects of the accessioning of archival materials, regardless of format, to support primary source research and instructional needs for a broad range of constituent groups
  • Support instructional and research-related services for in-person and online inquiries through a multitude of methods
  • Take a lead role in the archival arrangement and description of accessioned materials in both analog and digital formats according to standard archival research practices and provide oversight of other staff engaged in the same
  • Conduct reference interviews and provide instruction explaining the archival research process and methods for locating and evaluating evidence found in archival materials
  • Provide mediated access to archival materials


Digital Operations:

  • Collaborate with Archives personnel in the development and implementation of archival policies, procedures, and services particularly as they relate to access and use of digital content
  • Oversee the management of archival materials using archives collections management software and in alignment with the University of Illinois Library's digital preservation environment
  • Analyze archival use patterns and provide recommendations for expanding digital content so as to improve the Archives' reach to known user communities


Management support:

  • Assist in a variety of tasks associated with the management of archival operations including oversight of public spaces and supervision of students as needed



Academic Professional employees are encouraged to use 'investigation time' to pursue areas of interest, not directly in support of an immediate program need, in accordance with the University Library's policy on Investigation Time for Academic Professional Employees < Some investigations originating in this manner may evolve into regular work assignments or production activities.



Required Qualifications:

  • ALA-accredited master's degree of library/information science; or master's degree in archives, museum studies, public history, or related field with degree date prior to start of employment
  • Prior professional or pre-professional experience applying archival techniques and practices to processing archival materials, both digital and analog
  • Experience successfully managing and completing a diverse range of projects in a timely and accurate manner
  • Demonstrated interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to lift 30 pounds to a height of five feet
  • Ability to communicate clearly in writing and in person
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and in a team environment


Preferred:

  • Coursework/focus on archives, museum studies, or related history field
  • One or more years of demonstrated experience processing archival materials
  • Experience with Archon, ArchivesSpace, or other current archives collection management systems
  • Working knowledge of preservation and/or conservation practices

Salary and rank: The budgeted salary range for academic professional positions in the Library is $58,700 - $70,000 and is commensurate with credentials and experience. The University of Illinois Library is committed to competitive salaries and attending to equity in compensation within the organization.



Terms of Appointment: Twelve-month appointment; 24 annual vacation days; 12 annual paid holidays; 12 annual sick-leave days (cumulative), plus an additional 13 sick-leave days (non-cumulative) available, if needed, each year; health insurance requiring a small co-payment is provided to employee (with the option to purchase coverage for spouse and dependents); required participation in State Universities Retirement System (SURS) (8% of annual salary is withheld and is refundable upon termination), with several options for participation in additional retirement plans; newly-hired employees are covered by the Medicare portion of Social Security and are subject to its deduction.
