Andy Statman will celebrate Bill Monroe’s 100th Birthday Tuesday, September 13th, 9:00—10:30pm at the Charles Street Synagogue, 53 Charles Street at West 4th, 212-242-6425. Andy will perform with Charles Giordano and Thirsy Dave Hansen.
The first time I heard Andy:
I moved to New York City in August of 2002 to begin my fellowship training at Saint Vincent’s Hospital-Manhattan. In search of an apartment near the hospital I happened to walk by a synagogue in the West Village. It had what at the time seemed like a peculiar banner hanging out front. It read something like “Bluegrass and Klezmer, Mondays at 7 pm.”
It was Monday and almost seven, so I entered. I recognized the instruments. A mandolin with double bass and percussion. A clarinet that would be played later was there. The improvisation was something new and wondrous. The complexity and beauty of Andy Statman’s genius whirled around me. Life and living in New York City had begun.
