Inaugural Bluegrass in the Park in Madison Square Park, Sept. 17, 12:30-6:30

madsqaremusicIf you haven’t made it to a bluegrass festival yet this year, you are in luck. Studio Series has lined up some top-shelf acts from the bluegrass world. The Nashville Bluegrass Band, who kicked off the Emelin Bluegrass Series last year and just played the Delaware Valley Bluegrass Festival close the day’s program. Their return to the heart of Manhattan, let alone the northeast this soon is a real treat. (I also spied on Joe Newberry’s Facebook page that he and Mike Compton have a house concert planned in NYC for December, 2011!)

I will be seeing Valerie Smith and Liberty Pike for the first time. From the YouTube clips I have watched, Valerie packs some Liza Minnelli razzmatazz wattage into her live performances. It’s a shade of bluegrass that should blend in just fine with old Broadway. I have never forgotten Becky Buller’s fiddling from when I heard her about twelve years ago and am excited that she is playing, singing and producing with Valerie. The Cherryholmes Brothers, Donna Hughes, and Della Mae also perform. Snippets on all the performers and links to their websites can be found at the Madison Park Conservancy website.

If I am going to be listening to some of my favorite music in my favorite city, I should be eating some of my favorite foods. Shake Shack is in Madison Square Park. And Fatty Crab looks like it will be offering food on site. Since both are not too far from my neighborhood, I will most likely be bringing back food from Eataly for one meal and Kalustyan’s or Curry in a Hurry for a second or third.
